In this guide of fun things to do in Palm Springs, I’m sharing with you where to stay, unique experiences, and what hikes you shouldn’t miss. Plus, at the end, I’ve even included what to pack!
Last year, Ben and I hopped down for a long weekend in March to soak up the sunshine and explore. I’ve been fortunate to have been several times, but it was my boyfriend Ben’s first time. In the end, he really enjoyed it for its awesome hikes and unique desert vibe! So whether you have been to Palm Springs before or if this is your first time, I hope this guide will equip you with some new things to try.
How to Get There
Ready to hit the road to Palm Springs? Whether you’re flying in from afar or embarking on a scenic road trip, getting to this desert paradise is a breeze! If you’re flying, Palm Springs International Airport offers convenient access to the city, with direct flights from major cities. Once you’ve landed, you’re just minutes away from the heart of Palm Springs! However, you are visiting during peak season, fly in and out of LAX, to save some money. Then rent a car to drive 2-3 hours along the highway from LA to Palm Springs.
For those opting for a road trip, the journey through the desert landscape is part of the adventure. Cruise down the iconic Route 111 or take the scenic route through Joshua Tree National Park. So pack your bags, hit the road, and get ready for an unforgettable desert getaway in Palm Springs!
Where to Stay in Palm Springs
Before diving into all the fun things to do in Palm Springs, let’s first figure out the perfect place to stay. This desert oasis boasts an array of accommodations to suit every taste and budget. Adventurous Things to Do: How to Stay Active in Palm Springs
1. Indian Canyon Trails
‘Don’t go chasing waterfalls’…but if you must, make sure to check out these trails. There’s a variety of different hikes in the park, but we loved Murray Canyon at Indian Canyon Trails because of the variety of microclimates and the incredible waterfalls we found along the way! Do note that on this particular hike, prepared to get wet and dirty. You have to walk through streams or skip along rocks to continue along the trail, which makes for a fun but dirty hike. Also, if you plan to explore the caves or waterfalls, wear clothes you can get wet in, or bring a swimsuit.
Alternatively, if you want to explore the park but would like a guide, hop on a 4WD tour to explore the park! On this tour, you will enjoy a mix of driving and hiking while uncovering the ancient grounds of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Marvel at breathtaking rock formations, majestic fan palms, and over 150 plant species thriving in these vibrant palm oases.
*Note: this national park has a small admission fee ($12.50 USD). Check out their website for hours, as they change per season. This hiking and 4WD tour includes the admission fee and an informative tour guide.
2. Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
Embark on an unforgettable journey aboard the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. You’ll traverse through five transitional zones from desert to mountain peaks in just 10 minutes. Ascend from the Valley Station (2,643 feet) to the Mountain Station (8,516 feet), where you’ll be greeted by breathtaking panoramic views and temperatures 30 degrees cooler than the desert below. So pack some layers, for when you get to the top!
After your scenic tramway ride, explore the 14,000-acre Mt. San Jacinto State Park. It offers pristine wilderness and seasonal activities like cross-country skiing in winter and hiking in summer. Indulge in dining options at the Mountain Station, from upscale contemporary cuisine at Peaks Restaurant to casual fare at Pines Cafe. And don’t miss the chance to visit gift shops, a Natural History Museum, and enjoy informative movies detailing the tramway’s history and the wonders of the state park at the summit. Experience the magic of Palm Springs from a whole new perspective!
3. Hike the Palm Desert Cross
45 minutes-1 hour round trip. Hike to the top, where you will see a massive cross. Apparently, some people do this one at night with headlamps because the cross is lit up at night time. Personally, I enjoyed it in the morning because the views were breathtaking. Also, there is an optical illusion wall art installation at the base of the mountain. See my picture below, but honestly, you have to see it for yourself. (Hike was 6/10 in difficulty)
4. Bump and Grind Hike
The entrance point is located behind Target in Rancho Mirage, and the hike takes about 1.5 hours, round trip.
*Tip: When you start this hike, you can either start the trail to the right or to the left, as it is a big loop. I HIGHLY recommend starting to the right, as this option is not nearly as steep and difficult as if you go left. Instead, we came down the left-hand side, and I was very grateful when I saw how steep it was. This hike offers incredible views of the valley below and the surrounding mountains. Make sure to bring lots of water on this one!
Note: this hike was 8/10 in difficulty as it is very steep in places. Keep this in mind if you have bad knees or aren’t an avid hiker.
5. Bike Around Old Palm Springs
Biking around old Palm Springs offers a delightful journey through time and aesthetics. As you pedal through the streets, you’ll be captivated by the charming retro houses adorned with vibrant, eye-catching doors. Each pedal stroke unveils a new layer of history and character, showcasing the unique architectural heritage of the area. The leisurely pace of biking allows for a more intimate exploration, where every turn reveals a snapshot of the city’s past intertwined with its present charm. Be sure to stop at the iconic Pink Door and snap a shot for your Instagram. This door is so famous to Instagrammers that it even has its own Instagram account. This road is also filled with other stunning retro Palm Springs houses to drool over during your drive.

11. Shopping
Although not much of a tip, if you love shopping, you will love Palm Desert. Endless outlets, Target, Nordstrom Rack, Saks off 5th, and all the other high-end or bargain shopping you love live here.
Shopping on El Paseo
Only the best place in Palm Desert to shop and people watch! Shops like Free People, Tiffany’s and Co., Anthropology, and J.Crew, just to name a few. And just off of El Paseo, you will also find incredible outlets where you can snag a great deal. I was so excited to shop at Sacks off Fifth & Nordstrom Rack, as we don’t have these shops in Canada. If you are Canadian and haven’t heard of them, think of designer clothing for reasonable prices!
Saturday Market
In Rancho Mirage, there is a massive market every Saturday morning from 8 am to 2 pm. To be honest, I don’t know whether to call this a vintage market or a flea market, as there was such a variety of items. Anything from clothing, accessories, crystals, cooking & gardening tools, pet toys, sports equipment, food, and flowers. Honestly, this market had everything, and at great prices. Most booths asked for cash, and if you didn’t have it, there was an ATM on site (some booths also accepted credit cards). If you plan to go, I do recommend going early and giving yourself at least an hour to walk around. We shopped from 9-11 am, and at 11 am, it was getting very hot and crowded. Also, when I went in March 2018, there wasn’t an entrance fee.
Thursday Night Old Palm Springs Street Market
Every Thursday night, Old Palm Springs closes down their main road for pedestrians only and opens it up to a huge night market filled with over 180 vendors. Think vintage clothes, food, art, and jewelry. This place had everything and was so much fun to check out! It is a free event and great for all ages. Also, if you love dates, make sure to look for the stand that sells local and freshly picked Medjool dates.
12. Relax
Lastly, make sure to fit in lots of time to relax. Whether that’s by sleeping in, reading a book, or sunbathing with a cocktail in hand, and hopefully near a pool. Vacations are meant to be relaxing and should allow you to unplug and slow down from your busy schedules back home! With that being said, I hope this guide helps you have the most memorable, relaxing holiday. Just writing out this blog post made me so happy because Palm Springs is such a beautiful place, filled with good vibes and memories! I already can’t wait to go back one day.
What to Pack for Palm Springs
- If you are travelling outside of North America, don’t forget an international power adapter
- Lots of bathing suits & sunscreen!
- Sundresses to wear in the hot weather during the day
- UV-protected Sunglasses & Sunhat to wear by the pool
- A good book & magazines to read beside the pool. (Here is some of my favourite travel books)
- Running shoes and this comfortable workout dress (with built-in bra and shorts) that you can wear to golf, hike or play tennis.
- And an evening dress to wear out for dinner on El Paseo!
- Sandals you can wear day and night
