Best Things to Do in Tofino BC
1. Surf in Tofino, BC
Without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Tofino is surfing! Regardless, if you want to learn how to surf, or already know how to hang 10 and catch a wave, make sure to try BC’s most famous surf area. Although the water is colder, the best swell is in the fall and winter.
- Already a pro? Make sure to rent a wetsuit and maybe booties, as the water is cold all year-round! Some beaches to surf at are Middle Beach, Chesterman Bay, Schooner Cove, or Cox Bay
- Never surfed a wave in your life. No worries! There are plenty of great surf lessons and camps to help you become a pro in no time. Look up Surf Sisters Surf School or Pacific Surf Co. to get started.
2. Whale Watching Tour
Board a boat and venture out into the waters off Tofino for a chance to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Keep your eyes peeled for the iconic sight of a whale breaching the surface or a pod of dolphins frolicking in the waves. Whale watching tours in Tofino offer a unique and unforgettable opportunity to witness these incredible animals up close.
During our 3-hour tour, we not only saw grey whales and humpbacks, but also eagles, porpoises and sea lions. We loved our guide, Ryan, who went out of his way to find us whales and show us a good time!
3. Explore Meares Island
Next, immerse yourself in the natural wonders of the region by exploring Meares Island. This lush, forested island is home to some of the oldest trees in British Columbia, including the famous “Big Tree,” a massive cedar that is estimated to be over 1500 years old. The size of these trees still amazes me, and it felt so peaceful to be amongst these giants for the afternoon.
The boardwalk trail through the ancient rainforest provides a peaceful and awe-inspiring experience as you wander amongst towering trees and vibrant greenery. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as bald eagles, black bears, and otters that call the island home. Meares Island offers a chance to connect with nature in a profound way and will leave you feeling rejuvenated and inspired.
Tip: It took us about two hours to walk around the island! Guided kayaking tours to Meares Island are also a great option if you have good weather.
How to Get to Meares Island
Keep in mind, in order to visit Meares Island you do need to hire a sea taxi to get you there and back. But the small expense ($10 ferry round-trip & $20 park fees) and 10-minute boat ride gave us this little island all to ourselves for the afternoon.
4. Hike to the Top of Cox Bay Landing
Cox Bay Landing is a more difficult hike, that isn’t well marked, but the view makes it all worth it. Unfortunately, Tofino, BC, is known to be sunny one minute and then rainy the next, and that was the case this day. We left the beach with the sun beaming down on us, and when we got to the top, the skies had clouded over and we had some very wet photos at the top. Then in the 20 minutes, it took us to get down to the beach, it was bright and sunny again. This weather left us with very muddy shoes, so I suggest bringing a rain jacket and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. Since this hike isn’t too long (just steep), you could do it in rain boots.
Directions for Cox Bay Landing
This hike starts at the far left-hand side of the beach (when looking towards the ocean). There is no signage, but you will see an opening in the trees near the far back corner of the woods. We took this trail all the way up until we reached this view. At times, this ‘trail’ felt more like a small muddy stream, but it did get us to the top. We also had to go up some steep areas and used the surrounding roots or trees to keep us steady.
5. Visit Tofino Botanical Gardens
Tofino Botanical Gardens offers visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the stunning flora of the region, with a variety of native and exotic plants to admire. Stroll through the well-maintained gardens, take in the vibrant colours and unique art, and appreciate the peaceful atmosphere that surrounds you. To be honest, there are better botantical gardens in Victoria or Vancouver, BC. So if you are short on time, skip this activity and spend time enjoying the other best things to do in Tofino.
6. Take a Hot Springs Cove Tour
After exploring the gardens, continue your journey through Tofino’s natural wonders by experiencing the healing waters of Hot Springs Cove on a guided tour. A Hot Springs Cove tour is certainly one of the best things to do in Tofino, offering a unique opportunity to relax and rejuvenate in natural hot springs surrounded by breathtaking coastal scenery. Imagine soaking in mineral-rich waters while taking in the sights and sounds of the rugged West Coast. With an array of picturesque beaches to choose from, you can unwind on the soft sands, surf the waves, or take a leisurely stroll along the water’s edge. And if you’re feeling adventurous, I urge you to explore the hidden coves and tidal pools that line the shore, where you will find colourful sea urchins, star fish, and other marine life.
My Favourite Beaches:
- Cox Bay Beach – Cox Bay by far has the best vibe with great sized waves for beginners. At the north end of the beach you will find tons of tidal pools brimming with marine life, and Pettinger Point, a beautiful lookout with secluded beaches. We love Cox Bay Beach so much, that I actually got married on it.
- Chesterman Beach – The best beach for a long stroll or biking on the sand. Best to go at low tide so you can walk out on the sandspit to Frank Island.
- Tonquin Beach -Tonquin Beach offers a tranquil escape with its secluded cove, soft sands, and surrounding forest trails that provide breathtaking views and easy access to nature. If you want to discover beautiful look out points, walk the trail between Tonquin Beach and Middle Beach.
- Mackenzie Beach – A beach with calmer waters, great for families with kids and if you want to go SUP boarding.
- Long Beach – Long Beach is located in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, and spans more than 16 kilometers, making it the longest beach on Vancouver Island’s west coast.
- Florencia Bay -More of a local’s spot as it is the farthest beach from Tofino. It also has limited parking and a long 1.2 km trail to the beach, including stairs. However, once you get to this beach, it is heaven.
Since there are too many beaches to list them all, I’ve included Tofino’s tourism site here that lists all the local beaches & trails, with directions, photos, and what activities they are best known for (ie. surfing, swimming, SUPing, etc)!
End Each Day with a Sunset Beach Walk
One of the main reasons people come to Tofino is the beautiful beaches and scenery. Since the beaches stretch for miles, you are guaranteed to find a quiet corner to enjoy the magical sunsets, and maybe even a sneaky beverage.
Beach Fires: For those wanting to have a beach fires in fall, winter or spring, head to Mackenzie or Chesterman Beaches. All other beaches prohibit beach fires. But if are going to have a fire, please tread lightly, clean up after yourself, and obey BC’s fire restrictions.
12. Take a Day Trip to Ucluelet
Taking a day trip to Ucluelet is a fantastic addition to your Tofino adventure. I recommend doing this either on the day you arrive or before you leave, as it is on the other side of the Pacific Rim Highway entrance. Just a 40-minute drive from Tofino, or 13 minutes from the Pacific Rim Visitor Centre, this charming coastal town offers plenty to explore. Stroll the scenic Wild Pacific Trail, where rugged coastline views and dramatic ocean waves make for unforgettable memories.
